The craze about flu season hasn't been overreaction when it comes to the Greenwich High School field hockey team.
The Cardinals, thanks to some good sportsmanship on the part of Farmington, postponed its Class L semifinal game a day later than originally scheduled because a third of its roster was stricken with the flu.
Greenwich, minus eight players, gutted out a 1-0 upset victory over Farmington on Nov. 18.

Shortstop Audy Ciriaco continued his quick rise through the Detroit Tigers' farm system by being added to the club's 40-man major league roster Friday along with second baseman Scott Sizemore, right fielder Brennan Boesch and first baseman-outfielder Ryan Strieby.
The Tigers filled the four openings on their roster with those prospects to protect them from being taken by other major league teams in the Dec. 10 Rule 5 draft.

ANNANDALE, Va. A 71-year-old woman has been killed in a freak accident outside her home in Annandale.
Emma Cabrera taught high school Spanish at TC Williams' Minnie Howard Campus.
Lucy Caldwell, spokeswoman for the Fairfax County Police Department, says the fatal accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. on Charles Hawkins Way.

After starting the season in the Venezuelan Summer League, catcher Ramon Cabrera was promoted to the GCL, where he got his first taste of professional baseball in the U.S. Cabrera responded better than expected.
In 37 games with the GCL Pirates, he hit .291 and drove in 16.
The switch-hitter also showed impressive plate discipline all season for being just 19 years old.

New research released today by the Food Bank For New York City -- NYC Hunger Experience 2009: A Year in Recession -- reveals that the number of New York City residents experiencing difficulty affording food decreased from 3.9 million (48 percent) in 2008 to 3.3 million (40 percent) in 2009 - even though 11 percent of households in New York are experiencing food insecurity, and New York City's unemployment rate is up to 10.3 percent.
